Rifaximin is an antibiotic only useful for bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections . It is commonly used to treat traveller’s diarrhoea often caused by E. coli . Rifaximin should not be used if you have a fever or bloody diarrhoea. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Read more on Rifaximin here
Rifaximin is also used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea. It is also used to prevent a brain problem caused by liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy). It may help you think more clearly.
Description
Rifaximin treats traveller’s diarrhoea and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea but stopping the growth of bacteria that cause diarrhoea. Rifaximin should not be used if you have a fever or bloody diarrhoea.
Your doctor may have prescribed Rifaximin for a different use. It is also used to prevent a brain problem caused by liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy) by stopping the growth of bacteria that produce toxins and that may worsen liver disease. Read more on Rifaximin here
