Progesterone pessaries/suppositories are most commonly used in women undergoing IVF treatments. They can also be used in post menopausal women using bio-identical hormone replacement therapy.  These pessaries may also be used as suppositories and they do not come with an applicator. They are used as you would a tampon. You can read more about Progesterone

Description

Progesterone is a steriod hormone and is largely produced by the corpeus luteum, although small amounts are also produced in the adrenal glands.

Progesterone is often called ‘the happy hormone’ as sometimes when women experience estrogen dominance or progesterone deficiency they can experience anxiety.  Progesterone has a calming and relaxing effect.  Progesterone has many uses in both men and women.

Your doctor as prescibed a bio-identical form of Progesterone (meaning exactly the same molecules as the ones nature designed in your body since birth), thus side effects are limited to an extension of their action.

Progesterone is a female hormone which plays an important role in ovulation and menstruation.  It causes changes in the lining of your uterus, making it simple for a fertilised egg to attach at the beginning stages of pregnancy.  Progesterone is then needed during pregnancy to help your body maintain a successful pregnancy.

Vaginal progesterone is used to help prevent threatened abortions in women undergoing IVF treatment.  They can also be used in post menopausal women who are receiving oestrogen hormone replacement therapy.

Studies have been done on progesterone suppositories and their effect on threatened abortion. See here
