Our pharmacists have a true passion for nutritional therapy to support children with autism, attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), allergies and other conditions.
Pyrrole disorder is easy to diagnose and remedy with appropriate nutritional therapies. It is an abnormality in biochemistry where patients produce too much kryptopyrrole which is diagnosable by a simple urine test as the excess amounts flow here. It has also been referred to as the Mauve Factor as in 1950 Dr Abram Hoffer discovered a mauve spot on chromatographic urine testing of patients with schizophrenia.
The kryptopyrrole molecule is both heat and light sensitive and so proper collection, transport and testing precautions are required to ensure accurate results.
The kryptopyrrole molecule binds to Vitamin B6 and Zinc and carries these out into the urine as well causing deficiencies in these vitamins. It can also lead to impaired fatty acid metabolism leading to high levels of Omega 6.
Dr Hoffer showed in patients with high urinary pyrrole levels that treatment with high dose niacinamide both normalised the urinary pyrrole level and treated the characteristic clinical symptoms of pyrrole disorder. These include anxiety (including social anxiety), over sensitivity to light, smell and sound, poor stress tolerance, explosive temper or aggression, white spots on finger nails (due to the zinc deficiency). In the 1970s Dr Carl Pfeiffer showed similar results with high doses of vitamin B6 and zinc, which is the current treatment of choice.
Treatment is simple with either specialised vitamin capsules or a transdermal vitamin cream. The hallmark treatment of pyrrole disorder is with Vitamin B6 and or pyridoxal-5-phosphate (active B6) along with magnesium and zinc. Vitamin C, Vitamin E (as mixed tocopherols) and niacinamide are often part of treatment due to their strong antioxidant properties. Prescribers often add things like manganese and biotin.
Other biochemical diagnoses include low histamine, high histamine, copper excess and zinc deficiency
