Cholestyramine is not absorbed into the body. It works by absorbing and binding to substances including cholesterol, bile salts and bio-toxins in the small intestine. These bio-toxins are tightly bound, so they cannot be reabsorbed, and are excreted harmlessly through the bowel, via the stool. Description
Cholestyramine binds bile in the gastrointestinal tract to prevent its reabsorption. It is a strong ion-exchange resin, which means that it can exchange its chloride ions with bile acids in the gastrointestinal tract and bind them strongly in the resin matrix. Cholestyramine is traditionally used in lowering cholesterol but more recently has found value in treating lyme disease and biotoxin illness.
