4-Aminopyridine has been used for many years to help manage the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. It can help improve walking and other motor activities.
It is a potassium channel blocker which when used in multiple sclerosis has been shown to improve visual function, motor skills and relieve fatigue. It appears to be most effective in patients with the chronic progressive form of multiple sclerosis. 4-AP is thought to increase conduction in demyelinated nerves by blocking potassium channels.

4-Aminopyridine is available as a commercial tablet called Fampyra which consists of 10mg of 4-aminopyridine with microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, magnesium sterate and the film coating (White Y-1-7000 E171 contains hypromellose, titanium dioxide and macrogol 400).
